11-year-old Noah Hathaway was cast to play Atreyu, and his character was told to go on a quest to save the [[The Childlike Empress/Moon Child|Childlike Empress]] from death. After reaching the [[Swamps of Sadness]], Atreyu's horse, Artax, drowned in the swamps, leaving Atreyu disconsolate. [[Morla]], a giant turtle, told Atreyu to go to the [[Southern Oracle]]. But it was 10,000 miles away. Atreyu nearly drowns in the swamp but is saved by Falkor the Luckdragon. Explaining that he was carried 9,891 miles while unconsious, Falkor encouraged Atreyu to go through killer statues. As a knight got blasted to death, Atreyu made it through safely. He then reached the next gate, actually seeing [[Bastian]], a boy who was reading the book. Reaching the southern oracle, they told Atreyu to give the empress a name. The wolf also reveals that he is a servant of [[The Manipulators]], the force behind The Nothing. They wish to prevent the Empress's chosen hero from saving her. G'mork then reveals that when the princess of the city discovered his treachery against the Empress, she imprisoned him and left him to starve to death. When Atreyu announces that he is the hero G'mork has sought, the wolf laughs and succumbs to death. However, upon being approached, G'mork's body instinctively seizes Atreyu's leg in his jaws. Meanwhile, Falkor retrieves AURYN from the sea and arrives in time to save Atreyu from the rapid approach of The Nothing.
Atreyu entered [[Silver City]], meeting Bastian, and they agreed to go to [[Horok|the castle that looks like a hand]], where the giants came from.

Atreyu and Bastian reached the castle, and met Pyornkrachzark, and his son [[Junior]]. Organizing a plan, Atreyu sneaked past the fire arrows, but Bastian got caught in one of the beams. Atreyu used the Auryn to delfect the beams from killing Bastian.

Falkor and Atreyu return to the Childlike Empress, who assures them they have brought her rescuer to her—Bastian. But, Bastian decides to take over Fantastica for himself, and yet he is stopped by Atreyu, whom Bastian grievously wounds in battle.
Bastian managed to get inside, but Atreyu was caught by the guards. As he dangled from wiring over a shaft of lava, a giant cut the rope, and Bastian helped him up.

They met [[Xayide]], the Emptiness, and they made their way towards the Ivory Tower. As Atreyu began to feel worried about Bastian with Xayide, Bastian told him not to worry. Xayide later told Bastian that his friends had turned against him. That night, he put on an invisibility belt, and Atreyu saw the memory-collecting machine that Xayide had built, and every time Bastian made a wish, he lost one of his memories.

Atreyu fought Bastian over it, and Bastian gripped Atreyu's shoulder and shoved him over the cliff, as he plunged 3 stories of rock. Atreyu
 
Turning lifeless at the bottom, Bastian was horrified for a few seconds but then shouted, "You've brought this on yourself!" Coming to, he realized that everything Atreyu said was true, but Falkor flew Atreyu's dead body away to Silver City.

Atreyu (German: Atréju) is the deuteragonist in Michael Ende's novel The Neverending Story.

Novel

Atreyu is a Greenskin warrior from the Grassy Ocean in Fantastica.

Upon discovery that the Childlike Empress is dying, Atreyu is summoned to find a cure.

The Empress gives the AURYN to To Atreyu, a powerful medallion that protects him from all harm. At the advice of the giant turtle, Morla the Aged One, Atreyu sets off in search of an invisible oracle known as Uyulala, who may know the Empress' cure. In reaching her, he is aided by a luckdragon named Falkor, whom he rescues from the monster 'Ygramul the Many'.
